Duncan Neuhauser Curricular Innovation Awards

In order to encourage the development and dissemination of original curricular materials pertaining to the teaching of improvement in healthcare, AHI hosts the annual Duncan Neuhauser Curricular Innovation Awards in Healthcare Improvement. This award, presented at the AHI Scientific Symposium annually, recognizes new curricular material that has potential for significant impact in teaching improvement in healthcare, is innovative in its educational approach, and has the ability to be adopted by other schools, institutions, or professions. A first prize of $500 is awarded, with the second and third place awardees receiving $300 and $200 respectively. Materials may include: case studies, classroom exercises, or other didactic materials that can be used for teaching improvement in healthcare. Content areas may include: patient-centered care, patient safety, quality improvement, informatics, evidence-based care, and teamwork/communication. Submitted materials will be peer reviewed. Winning entries will be posted on the AHI website.

Paul Batalden Leadership Award

This award recognizes a senior who exemplifies the type of career that has advanced the mission of AHI. The unique aspect to quality improvement is the emphasis on scholarship.

Criteria for award selection:

  • International recognition as a contributor to the field
  • Publications consistent with the scholarship mission of AHI
  • Clear impact on mentoring to students and junior faculty and to the field in general
  • Visionary who has helped shape the field with original ideas, innovation, and creativity
  • Serves as a role model to many
  • Has demonstrated an enduring commitment to advancing the scholarship of improvement
